In today’s Gospel we see Jesus once again performing an amazing miracle for a person who has been suffering for a long time. A beggar cries out to Jesus through a crowd, pleading for him to restore his sight. Jesus, after hearing the man call him the Son of David responds with the miracle and more; “Have sight; your faith has saved you.” (Lk 18:42). Jesus here shows that it is the devout faith of the man that has saved him, the devout faith oriented toward the glory of God. Jesus performs many miracles, for we know that he did many more than what is written down in scripture, but he always led people deeper than physical healing. He wanted to provide spiritual healing to people through the physical healing. We are created as body and soul, a beautiful union created by God. We see this glory through the gifts of the sacraments; for, the sacraments are the outward signs of an inward reality. This being said, Jesus is teaching us that we are healed through the grace of God and we are so loved by him, and God is asking us to have faith in him and to respond to that love. We are being called to a growth that is not only physical by the ministries we are a part of, but of a spiritual growth that deepens our personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Reflection: How do I need to spiritually grow?
Lord God, thank you for today and everyday. Thank you for your grace and mercy which you have bestowed upon me. Lord, help me to see your light in all of creation. Assist me, oh God, in having not just sight with my eyes, but a vision with my heart, that I may do and follow your will. I pray, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen.
