In today’s Gospel we see Jesus being cast out as a prophet from his own home; “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house” (Mk 6:4). Though he is able to perform great miracles and has been teaching the people in the synagogue, they can only see him as the son of a mere carpenter and nothing more. Throughout the Gospels Jesus will note the great faith of gentiles who come to him while at the same time the Jewish people are the ones with little faith who often reject him based on their narrow understanding. Jesus today is seeking us to open our hearts, to have faith in him that what he says and does is the truth. He is not only speaking the Word of God, but as we find through the Gospel of John, he is the Word; “And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). Just as the gentiles are receptive of the person of Jesus, so too must we be receptive of the risen Christ and seek a deep and intimate relationship with him, for only then will we find the fullness of our freedom and our happiness.
Reflection: At what times do I find myself with little faith?
Lord God, thank you for today and everyday. Thank you for your love and mercy. Please Lord, send forth your Spirit, that through your graces I may encounter you in all that I do and in all that I meet today. I pray, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen.
