Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States is an official teaching document approved by the full body of the Catholic Bishops of the United States. It was approved in its current form in 2015 and a new introduction was approved in 2019.
The Bishops' own website summarizes the intent and purpose of the document as follows: “This statement represents our guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and duties as participants in our democracy. ... The statement lifts up our dual heritage as both faithful Catholics and American citizens with rights and duties as participants in the civil order.”
And from the document: "In this statement, we bishops do not intend to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. Our purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God’s truth. We recognize that the responsibility to make choices in political life rests with each individual in light of a properly formed conscience, and that participation goes well beyond casting a vote in a particular election."
In this free two-hour study we will introduce interested Catholics to the basic structure and message of the document. It is heartily recommended that this study not replace a careful reading of the document itself, which can be found here.
The study is being offered twice, both times on a virtual platform:
