In today's Gospel Jesus speaks about the offering of money by those that are rich and those that are poor. He notices the wealthy people putting in a good amount of money, and a poor widow who only gives two small coins. "I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those other have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood." (Lk 21:3-4). Jesus gives this saying to us to teach us that it is about quality, not quantity. God wants us to be truly devoted to him above all. Those that are rich are very well off adn are able to give large monetary donations, but that is not the only thing God seeks. God is looking for a change of heart from each and every one of us. He is desiring us to come to him with an open heart, and to leave behind our sinful life, to live a free one with him. The widow who put in the two coins was giving her life over to God because she was trusting her life to him, trusting that he would take care of her, because in those times, the widows and the orphans were the ones on the outskirts of the social circles. Christ desires us not to focus on what we are giving, but why we are giving and how we can develop a sacrificial heart of love.
Reflection: What 'two small coins' can I make as a sacrifice today?
Lord God, thank you for today and everyday. Thank you for your love and mercy. I pray Lord, that you allow my heart to be opened to your will. Strengthen in me oh God the desire to serve and do your will. Send forth your Spirit Lord that I may share your love to all those I encounter today. I pray, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen.
